Izvestia SOIGSI. 2026. Issue 59 (98). P.5-20.
Abstract:

The article presents a comprehensive biographical study of the life and career of Colonel of the General Staff Georgy Stepanovich Khutiev (1880–1964), a prominent figure of Terek Cossack origin. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, including documents from the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA) and the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF), as well as materials from emigre periodicals, the study meticulously reconstructs and clarifies the key milestones of his career. It details his education at the Tiflis Infantry Junker School and the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff, his combat path with the Kuban Plastun Battalions during the Russo-Japanese and First World Wars, for which he received numerous awards, including the St. George’s Weapon. A central focus of the research is the analysis of Khutiev’s role as one of the organizers and chief of staff of the Terek Cossack uprising in 1918, and subsequently as Chief of Staff of the Terek Cossack Host within the Armed Forces of South Russia in 1919–1920. The study is based on the principles of historicism and scientific objectivity. It utilizes historical-biographical and problem-chronological methods, as well as source analysis of archival documents and materials from emigre periodicals. The study introduces, for the first time in scholarly discourse, detailed information about his activities in emigration: his work in Constantinople, his social and charitable work as chairman of the Commission for Assistance to Terek Cossack Refugees in Bulgaria, and his life and organizational work within the Cossack diaspora in the United States. Special attention is paid to G. S. Khutiev’s extensive memoir legacy, which is assessed as a crucial source on the history of the Civil War in the North Caucasus, and the prospects for further study of his biography and unpublished works are outlined.
