Abstract:

This article is devoted to carpet weaving, a form of Ossetian decorative and applied art. Carpets in Ossetia served not only a utilitarian function but also served as home decoration, a symbol of luxury. Carpet weaving, like silk, silver, and gold embroidery, was practiced by women of the Ossetian privileged classes, as this occupation required free time and the ability to acquire expensive materials for the production of these items. The aim of this work is to accumulate information on carpet weaving, the materials, and manufacturing methods used for various carpets in North Ossetia. The object of this study is a variety of carpets produced in North Ossetia. To achieve this goal, descriptions of travelers who visited Ossetia in the first half of the 19th century, as well as published studies by pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and Russian authors, were used. This study utilized general scientific methods such as analysis, synthesis, and generalization, as well as the comparative method applied to historical sources to determine their reliability. Drawing on a variety of sources from the 18th to 20th centuries, this article examines the Ossetian carpet weaving tradition as a form of folk craft. The research findings can serve as an additional resource for studying the history of Ossetian material culture, enabling a more in-depth and thorough examination of applied arts, a valuable part of the Ossetian people’s cultural heritage. Ossetian folk crafts not only preserve unique traditions and skills but also contribute to the development of the local economy and tourism. Ossetian artisans contribute to the preservation and transformation of their people’s culture, continuing to pass on their knowledge and skills to future generations.
