Abstract:

Labor migration and youth participation in the development of virgin and fallow lands is a pressing issue of scientific and practical significance. Novelty: Based on archival documents and other sources, many of which are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, a reconstruction of youth participation in the development of virgin and fallow lands in Kabardino- Balkaria has been conducted. The methodological basis of the study is based on the principles of historicism, historiographical tradition, objectivity, and systematicity. A combination of general scientific and historical methods is used: modernization, civilizational, systemic, historicalcomparative, comparative, problem-chronological, and anthropological. This article examines the labor migration and contribution of youth in Kabardino-Balkaria to the development of virgin and fallow lands. The stages of sending the republic’s youth to new lands have been established, the number and composition of participants in the virgin lands campaign have been identified; the motivation of virgin lands workers and the volume of work completed have been studied. The experience of party and Komsomol organizations, and government agencies in mobilizing youth and other age groups of the population, including builders and machine operators, for the development of virgin lands and harvesting has been summarized. The prerequisites, incentive measures, and the procedure for sending people to the virgin lands on Komsomol vouchers have been identified. The labor activities of the virgin lands workers are considered: deforestation, plowing the land, construction of residential buildings, social facilities – a canteen, bakery, bathhouse, power plant, granary and other buildings. The problems and difficulties in providing warm clothing, organizing everyday life, food, medical and cultural services for the virgin lands workers are shown. The participation of special settlers-Balkars living in the virgin lands regions (North Kazakhstan, Akmola, Kustanai) in the development of virgin lands is considered. The contribution of young people, including students, to the virgin land harvest was studied. The total number of young people and other age groups, including construction workers, machine operators, and other specialists, who participated in virgin land development and harvesting was determined. It was concluded that, despite the difficulties, they made a significant contribution to virgin land plowing and harvesting. For many of them, virgin lands gave them a start in life.
