Abstract:

The article presents a comparative linguocultural study of Russian and Ossetian paremiological expressions about envy. The main aim of the article is to investigate the verbalization of the destructive emotion of envy within the paradigmatic worldview of Russian and Ossetian cultures. Over 60 Russian and 58 Ossetian paramiological expressions about envy were analyzed, selected from various sources using a continuous sampling method. The study reveals both similarities and differences in the paremiological worldview across the two languages. Similarities include the negative attitude of speakers towards the phenomenon of envy; in both languages envious individuals are evaluated negatively. In the paremiological worldview of both languages there is a concept of “white” and “black” envy: in Russian this is expressed through phraseological units, while in Ossetian it is conveyed through speech formulas. It is noted that several cultural attitudes are shared in the paremiological worldview of both languages: envy affects the emotional and physical state of the envious person and is reflected in their appearance; in both languages envy is associated with greed and its unproductiveness and futility are emphasized. Differences primarily manifest in the different emphasis: Russian paramiological expressions tend to focus more on objects of envy and often specify the cause of envy with a greater role given to the opposition “own/foreign”; Ossetian expressions, on the other hand, provide a general characterization of the envious person, describing their physical condition with a more harsh and negative attitude towards the envious, which is also expressed through ethnic markers indicating fundamental cultural values.
