Abstract:

This article examines methods of translating hyperbole from Persian into Russian using Banu Lahuti’s poetic translation of Ferdowsi’s poem “Shahnameh”. The poem contains numerous figures of speech and puns, making it considered one of the most important works of Persian literature. Accurately translating these figures of speech and puns is crucial for introducing speakers of other languages, including Russian speakers, to this literary work. The relevance of this topic lies in the fact that this is the first time the methods of rendering hyperbole in this work from Persian into Russian have been examined. The aim of the study is to identify translation transformations in the rendering of hyperbole in Banu Lahuti’s poetic translation. To achieve this goal, the study utilized methods such as examining relevant sources of information, comparing, and analyzing the data obtained. This descriptive study is based on a systems approach. The statistical dataset for this study included 26 verses containing hyperbole from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and their Russian translations in Banu Lahuti’s poetic translation. It was revealed that the translator, when rendering hyperbole in his poetic translation of the Shahnameh, uses the techniques of literal translation, omission, explication, and concretization. Literal translation is used more frequently than other techniques, with omission of hyperbole being the second most common.
