Abstract:
The publication is a translation from English into Russian of the eighth chapter “From Baku to Derbent” of Scottish baron John Abercrombie’s book “Journey through the Eastern Caucasus, with a chapter on the languages of the country”, written by him in 1888. This chapter is dedicated to Derbent, its environs and more distant areas (historical Tabasaran), through which the medieval defensive wall “Dag-bars” passed. The book, written in the genre of travel notes, contains a variety of information about onomastics, architectural and epigraphic monuments of the region, economic activities, social structure and everyday life, religious beliefs and languages of the peoples of the region, which allows it to be considered as a valuable source on the history and culture of the Eastern Caucasus.
