Abstract:
The epic novel “Towards Life” by Ossetian writer Elizaveta (Ezetkhan) Alekseevna Uruymagova is one of the brightest examples of a historical-revolutionary novel of epic scale in Ossetian fiction, conveying the spirit of the era, the spirit of the nation. It presents a socio-psychological portrait of the Ossetian people against the backdrop of the revolutionary events of the early 20th century. The materials published below contain part of the correspondence between Uruymagova and the writer Yuri Nikolaevich Libedinsky, who was the editor of the manuscript of the novel. They trace the literary collaboration between two creative individuals. The letters are dated 1945-1951. This was the time of intense work on the parts of the novel’s manuscript, their editing, preparation of the first book for publication and republication, as well as writing stories, essays, plays. The information contained in the letters makes it possible to reconstruct the events that accompanied the writing of the parts of the trilogy. They expand the existing knowledge in the Ossetian culture about Libedinsky as a translator of the Nart epic, focusing on his activities as a literary editor and mentor, who helped the writer in solving organizational issues during the publication of the novel. The materials are of not only professional interest. They are also important as a documentary source that complements knowledge about the peculiarities of post-war life, its problems and concerns. They present a picture of everyday life in the first post-war years. The assessments, judgments, and characteristics expressed provide an understanding of various aspects of the cultural life of Ossetia at that time. The letters were extracted from Libedinsky’s personal collection, stored in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, and are published for the first time.
